Summary

A relay race with obstacles where students must:

  • Name foods to include in a lunch box
  • Say where these foods come from

Required resources

  • Various objects to create obstacles (e.g., cones, hoops)
  • One bib per student (one colour per team)

How to play

  • Introduce the course to the students and demonstrate it.
  • During the warm-up, explain to the students what a balanced lunch can include. Also talk about where certain foods come from.
  • Divide the group into two teams. Assign each student a number between 1 and 10 (or according to the number of students per team).
  • Have students from each team sit in a line, according to their number, behind the starting line.
  • Give the signal to start the game.

Rules

  • Student 1 from each team must get up and run through the course as fast as possible. At the end of the course, the student must run through the course again to rejoin their team.
  • Student 1 names a nutritious food or beverage that could be included in a lunch box. Student 2 must say where that food comes from. Student 2 must then complete the course, and so on.
  • When a student completes the course, they go and sit at the back of their team’s line.
  • The winning team is the one where all the players finish the course first.

Activity notes

  • Here are some ideas for the obstacle course:
    • Going around cones
    • Jumping from one hoop to another
    • Running backwards
    • Doing frog jumps
  • The lunch should include a variety of foods. Here are examples:
    • Vegetables
    • Fruits
    • Dairy products
    • Grain products
    • Legumes
    • Eggs
    • Tofu
    • Meat
